ADG, NEZ, CRPF

North East Zone started functioning from 16th, December 2009, with the aim to supervise and monitor Operational and Administrative matters of all formations of CRPF deployed under the jurisdiction of North East Zone. Presently, there are four sectors (namely North East Sector, Jorhat (Ops) Sector, Manipur and Nagaland Sector and Tripura Sector), eight Ranges, five Group Centres, three Composite Hospitals, 35 GD Battalions and one CoBRA Battalion under the jurisdiction of this Zone.

India's North East is a land of undulating hills and plains with luxuriant green cover and a wide variety of rare and exotic flora and fauna. This part of the country has huge potential to be developed as a tourism hub as well as cluster of small scale industries. But post independence, this part of our country turned into a conflict zone which has witnessed prolonged and most violent form of insurgency. Traditionally, it has been associated with ethnic insurgency that has been aided and abetted by inimical forces operating from sanctuaries in India’s neighborhood and beyond. CRPF is deployed in this trouble torn region since the beginning of insurgency and has seen hard time when insurgency was at its peak in these states.

In recent past, insurgency in north east has been kept under tight leash. Overall general security scenario of North East region has improved to a larger extent. Many insurgents groups have entered into peace accord with Govt. of India as well as respective State Govt. while a large number of them are losing their mass support and their cadre strength has depleted considerably. Most of the active insurgents groups are facing financial crunch and fighting for their existence.

Apart from counter offensive measures CRPF is also trying to win over the hearts and minds of the people of North East States by means of various humanitarian efforts. CRPF is extending all out support to villagers during flood or other natural calamities. CRPF is also regularly visiting the remote localities to develop a good rapport with local population and extending all possible support. During nationwide lockdown to break the chain of COVID-19, North East Zone, CRPF distributed food packets on daily basis to poor and needy people. CRPF organized awareness campaigns against COVID-19 in interior villages, needy people were also provided masks and hand sanitizers to protect themselves from Corona Virus. Through Civic Action Programs, Force has thus embarked on a major outreach programme, which shall bear long term fruit.

I look forward to continuing our efforts to make North East, peaceful and free from long drawn violence.
